‘The Blitz’ Week 1 highlights and scores

High school football returned to Lubbock and the South Plains in Week 1, and the scoreboard told some wild stories right out of the gate. Frenship handed Lubbock-Cooper a 50-17 loss in what was easily the marquee matchup of the week between two of the area's bigger programs.

Frenship handed Lubbock-Cooper a 50-17 loss in what was easily the marquee matchup of the week between two of the area's bigger programs. Over in the Monterey-Coronado game, it came down to the wire, with Monterey surviving 36-35 in a one-point thriller that probably had both sidelines holding their breath on the final play. Estacado rolled over Lubbock High 47-13, and Liberty took care of Frenship Memorial 49-14 on the JV and freshman side of the Cooper-Frenship rivalry.

Out on the South Plains, the smaller schools didn't mess around either. Lockney blanked Smyer 62-0. Meadow ran past Lorenzo 57-0. Olton shut out Roosevelt 40-0. Levelland knocked off Plainview 49-27. Three shutouts in a single week say something about how lopsided some of these early matchups can be before district play sorts things out.

KLBK's "The Blitz" covered the full slate, with highlights and scores available through their broadcast. The Lamesa-Littlefield result was not fully reported in the available data.

That one-point Monterey win is the kind of result that will make the next meeting between those two teams appointment viewing before the season is over.
