The Navy had previously announced the carrier under construction would be called the USS Doris Miller. Miller, who served as a Navy cook, reportedly shot down four to six Japanese aircraft during the Pearl Harbor attack in World War II. CNN reported the rename effort, citing three sources familiar with internal discussions, two of whom said conversations have taken place about honoring Trump on the vessel instead.

The move has drawn criticism. Miller's story carries particular weight in American military history. He was a Black sailor given a non-combat role in a segregated Navy, and his actions under fire at Pearl Harbor made him one of the war's early decorated heroes. Stripping his name from a carrier specifically designated to honor him lands differently than a routine naming decision.
