Wayland Baptist University launches free bike-share program for students - Plainview Herald

The program runs through the university's Student Life office, where students can borrow bikes at no cost. Wayland is currently seeking donations of new or gently used bicycles to grow the fleet, so the number of available rides will depend on how much the community pitches in.

For students who don't own a vehicle, getting across Plainview for basic errands has been a real barrier. Shawn Thomas, vice president of athletics and student life, said something as simple as a trip across town can be difficult without a car, and Pioneer Bikeshare gives those students greater mobility. The program is designed specifically to extend transportation beyond the edges of campus, not just connect buildings on it.

Students at smaller universities in smaller cities often face a transportation gap that bigger schools with transit systems don't have. A free bike program won't replace a car, but for grabbing groceries or hitting a restaurant on a tight budget, it closes some of that gap without adding another bill. Whether the donation pipeline stays strong enough to keep the fleet useful is the question hanging over the whole thing.
