While data centers boom in Texas, their plans stay shrouded in secrecy

Developers are building these massive facilities, which are needed by the digital world. It means residents and even city planners might not know who's buying vast tracts of land, perhaps near our growing industrial parks east of town or along the I-27 corridor. According to state officials, this booming industry needs more transparency.

For Lubbock, this lack of transparency means less local input on major land use decisions. Imagine a giant facility, like the size of the South Plains Mall, going up with no public discussion about its water needs or increased traffic. Residents could face significant changes to their neighborhoods and infrastructure, such as increased demands on our power grid or water supply, without any prior warning. This situation leaves folks completely in the dark about their new industrial neighbors.

These facilities consume immense resources, yet their local footprint stays largely unknown.
