1,000 flags placed at Huneke Park to honor Sept. 11 victims - KCBD

Lubbock's first responders partnered with Prosperity Bank to set up the display. The flags don't represent a one-to-one count of lives lost, with 1,000 of them standing in for a death toll that reached 2,977 people across three sites.

Of those who died, 2,753 were killed in New York. That number includes 343 firefighters who went into the Twin Towers trying to get people out and never came back. Another 184 died at the Pentagon, and 40 more died near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers aboard Flight 93.

For people in Lubbock, the park gives a place to stop and sit with that weight. It's one thing to see the numbers in a textbook. Standing in a field of flags and trying to count them is something else entirely. First responders who worked alongside the Prosperity Bank team have their own reasons to feel that personally, as the 343 firefighters lost that day remain the largest single loss of rescue workers in American history.
