3 people injured after back-to-back crashes on I-27 - KCBD
Three people were hurt in a pair of chain-reaction crashes near 34th Street and I-27 around 10:40 p.m.
Police say 21-year-old Kelis Hardeman was driving south on I-27 when her SUV hit a car driven by 24-year-old Cade Wells. Shortly after that first collision, 56-year-old Ryan Patrick pulled over to assist. A second vehicle then plowed into Wells' and Hardeman's cars and hit Patrick before the driver took off. That vehicle has not been located.
Patrick was transported to Covenant Medical Center with serious injuries. Hardeman and Wells were taken to UMC with what police described as minor injuries.
For people who drive I-27 regularly, that stretch near 34th is already a busy transition point between the highway and surface streets, and a late-night crash there can pile up fast. Patrick had no involvement in the original wreck. He stopped to help strangers and ended up the most seriously hurt of the three.
Police are still searching for the driver who fled after hitting Patrick, a bystander who had done nothing but try to help.
