The investigation would be carried out by the Comptroller's office, giving it an independent financial lens rather than a political one. Abbott did not name the other districts under consideration, leaving school administrators across Texas wondering whether they could be next.

For Lubbock families, this matters. Lubbock ISD and other South Plains districts pull from the same state funding formulas Abbott is now scrutinizing. If the investigation finds widespread patterns of administrative overspending, it could pressure local school boards to reexamine how dollars flow from central offices to actual classrooms.

Texas spends tens of billions annually on public education, and the gap between what the state allocates and what lands in front of a teacher has been a pressure point in Austin for years.
