Annual Flag display honors 9/11 victims in Lubbock - KCBD

Lubbock's first responders partnered with Prosperity Bank to plant the flags, turning the park into a ground-level memorial for the day. The display is meant to give people here a moment to stop and think about the victims, the rescuers, and what that morning actually cost.

The numbers behind those flags are staggering. Of the 2,977 total deaths, 2,753 were in New York City alone, including 343 firefighters who died trying to get people out of the Twin Towers, more than the entire Lubbock Fire Department's sworn personnel count. Another 184 were killed at the Pentagon. Forty passengers and crew members died near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after forcing their hijacked plane down before it could reach its intended target.

For anyone who drives past Huneke Park today, the sight of a thousand flags lined up in the grass puts the scale of that morning into something you can actually see and walk through, not just read about in a number.
