Democratic statewide candidates offer careful optimism for November

Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor, comptroller and railroad commissioner told a Texas Tribune Festival crowd Friday that they see a real shot at breaking the party's statewide losing streak, which stretches back to 1994.

State Sen. Sarah Eckhardt of Austin, who's running for comptroller, put it bluntly during the panel. "We jumped into these races not knowing whether we could win them," she said. "Now the terrain seems to be changing. If we had waited until we were sure we could win, we would never have gotten up our asses."

Democrats point to backlash against the Trump administration and rising everyday costs as reasons GOP support may be softening after decades of Republican control in Texas. They view this election cycle as their most competitive shot in years at flipping at least one of the three statewide offices up for grabs.

For Texas voters, the panel signals a Democratic bench willing to bet on change rather than play it safe. None of the three candidates claimed certainty, but each argued the political ground has shifted enough to make a run worthwhile.
