ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas to make $6.4 million in 2027, nearly doubling his salary

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas runs the power grid that keeps lights on across most of the state, including here in Lubbock. ERCOT covers its costs mostly through administrative fees charged to electricity providers, and those providers typically pass that expense straight to customers on their monthly bills.

That funding structure means Vegas's raise does not come from a state budget line item most people never see. It comes from the same pool of money electricity providers pull from to cover ERCOT's operating costs, a pool that gets refilled by ratepayers. Folks in Lubbock who pay an electric bill each month are, indirectly, part of the system covering executive pay at the agency overseeing grid reliability.

For regular people here, the raise itself will not show up as a line item on a bill. It lands, though, at a moment when ERCOT's performance and spending decisions get scrutinized every time the grid gets stressed, from summer heat waves to winter freezes. Executive pay at an agency funded by fees passed down to customers tends to draw attention no matter how it is justified.

That increase comes without a vote from the people footing the bill.
