Doppler radar picked up thunderstorms dumping heavy rain across the warned area, with 2 to 3 inches already on the ground by the time the warning went out. Forecasters expect another 1 to 2 inches on top of that before the storms clear. That puts the warning zone north and west of the city itself, covering rural stretches and small communities where county lines meet.

People in the warned counties should avoid low-water crossings and dirt roads that dip through draws or playas, since those spots flood first and hardest. Farmers and ranchers near the Hale, Hockley or Lamb county lines need to watch runoff on their fields. Drivers on Highway 84 and the smaller farm-to-market roads through that stretch should watch for standing water before pushing through it.
