Former Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos transferring to Texas Tech

A Kentucky court sided with him last Friday, allowing him to enter the transfer portal outside the standard window. That legal win is what made the move to Lubbock possible.

Will Hammond remains Texas Tech's starting quarterback heading into the season. Castellanos is not coming in to push him out. What he does bring is rare depth at the position, a player who has actually started games at the Power Four level, which is not something most teams can say about their backup.

For Red Raider fans, this is the kind of roster move that matters in a conference where injuries can unravel a season fast. Offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich also gets a backup with a different skill set than Hammond, which gives Tech options if the offense needs to change shape mid-game. Depth at quarterback is boring until it suddenly isn't.

Castellanos is one of the few players in college football this year whose eligibility came directly from winning a lawsuit against the NCAA.
