McGuire made the comments at his Monday press conference when asked about the atmosphere waiting on the Red Raiders for Saturday's game against Abilene Christian. USC had drawn a noticeably thin crowd in Week Zero, enough to prompt the program to release a statement about the turnout. McGuire didn't let the moment pass.

"Not to take any shots, because I have a lot of respect for USC and Lincoln Riley, but it's really awesome to be playing in Lubbock, Texas, knowing we're going to be playing in front of 60,000," McGuire said. He then pointed to West Texas toughness as part of what makes the crowd reliable, rain or shine or scorching August heat.

For folks who've sat through a September afternoon at Jones AT&T Stadium when the temperature refuses to drop, that line lands differently. Lubbock fans know what it costs to fill those seats, and McGuire clearly knows it too.

USC had to explain away empty sections after their season opener. Texas Tech's coach is already selling out the house before his team plays a single snap.
