Lubbock-Cooper remains winless, falls to Canyon 49-24 - KCBD

The game stayed close early. Down 14-7 in the second quarter, kicker Aaron Fenelon drilled a field goal to cut the deficit to four points and give the Pirates a shot heading into halftime. Canyon had other plans. The Eagles answered with a 35-7 run that broke the game open and put Lubbock-Cooper away for good.

For a program used to competing at a high level, Thursday's collapse after the Fenelon field goal will sting for a while. The Pirates controlled the tempo for a stretch and looked like they had an answer, then watched Canyon score five touchdowns in a row while their own offense stalled out.

Lubbock-Cooper gets a bye week to regroup before hosting Wichita Falls Legacy on Friday, Oct. 2. That home date gives the Pirates a chance to reset in front of their own crowd and finally get in the win column, with an extra week to fix whatever broke down in that second-half stretch against Canyon.

A four-point game turned into a 25-point loss in the span of one quarter.
