Ole Miss toxicology reports expected soon and results may trigger anti-fentanyl law, official says

Toxicology reports in the deaths of two University of Mississippi students are expected as early as next week, according to Mississippi's commissioner of public safety, and the results could trigger the state's anti-fentanyl law.

The victims are identified as Robert Strang, a 20-year-old junior from Atlanta, and Aidan Hamilton, an 18-year-old freshman from Colorado. Both families have asked for privacy and compassion while they mourn. It remains unclear how the two students died. Narcotics detectives are already working the case in Oxford.

Separately, Oxford police announced arrests connected to a raid on a tobacco shop accused of trafficking narcotics. Investigators have not said publicly whether that raid connects directly to the two student deaths, but the timing has drawn attention on and around campus.

For the university community, the wait for lab results carries real weight. If toxicology confirms fentanyl involvement, Mississippi's anti-fentanyl law could kick in, opening the door to tougher charges against whoever supplied the drugs that killed Strang and Hamilton. Detectives are still piecing together how a freshman and a junior, one starting college and one about to finish it, ended up dead under circumstances they call suspicious.
