Texas Tech enrollment continues record growth, reaches more than 46,000 - KCBD

The number keeps climbing every fall. Tech first crossed the 45,000 mark on the opening day of the semester, then kept adding students through the early weeks as registration wrapped up. This year's final count is up 3,841 students from last fall, marking the fifth straight year of enrollment growth on campus.

Anyone who drives near campus already feels this. More students means more traffic backing up around University Avenue and Broadway, tighter parking near the dorms, and busier lines at the dining halls. Rental listings near Tech Terrace and along the apartment corridors on 19th Street get snapped up fast every August as landlords watch demand grow. Local businesses that lean on student traffic, coffee shops, bars, and shops along the strip near campus, are seeing more foot traffic than they did five years ago.

Growth like this also puts pressure on the university itself. Classroom space, housing, and academic advising all have to keep pace with thousands of new students showing up each fall.

Five years ago, nobody at Tech was talking about a 46,000 student campus. Now it is the new normal.
