Texas Tech students showcase Spain camp for kids who battled cancer - fox34.com

Art and photography made by children who battled cancer in Seville, Spain, are on exhibit as part of First Friday, created during a summer camp that Texas Tech students organized abroad. The camp grew out of what the university calls its first community-engaged learning course abroad, a model where students partner directly with organizations in the field rather than just sitting in a classroom.

Human Development and Family Sciences professor Shera Thomas-Jackson, who also serves as a faculty fellow with Tech's Outreach and Engagement program, helped build the partnership. She described the approach as working with community partners to find out what they need, then collaborating with them throughout the semester to reach those goals. Her partner in Seville was a nonprofit that works with children who have gone through cancer treatment.

For people in Lubbock, tonight's event turns First Friday into something more than a gallery walk. The art on the walls was made by kids who lived through something serious, and the students who helped them make it did so as part of their actual coursework at Tech.
