Wayland Baptist School of Business celebrates arrival of Starnes Market Ticker - Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

The university held the celebration Sept. 15, drawing students, faculty and community representatives for an event that included refreshments. The ticker honors Starnes for his leadership and vision within the department, according to the school. It gives Wayland's business students a piece of hands on infrastructure, the kind of real time market display more common at bigger university programs.

Marketing professor Jason Geesey and Bashir Easter, associate dean for graduate programs and assistant professor of management, helped fund and push the project forward. For a regional school like Wayland, adding a market ticker signals the business program wants to compete with larger institutions on the tools it offers students, not just the classes it teaches. Students studying finance or economics on campus now walk past a live feed of market data instead of just reading about it in a textbook.

It's a small addition on paper, a screen showing stock numbers, but it's the kind of detail that shows up on prospective student tours and gets a program noticed. Plainview sits less than an hour from Lubbock, and Wayland pulls plenty of South Plains students who might now see that ticker before they ever declare a major.
