Amazon suspends use of 21 Air, cargo carrier whose plane careened off Miami runway

The crash happened Sept. 6, when a Boeing 767 operating as Flight 7598 came in fast and skidded roughly 1,300 feet past the end of the runway. The plane slammed into a van carrying workers from a plane cleaning company. All five people killed in the crash were in that van. Five others were hurt.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company spent the past week supporting the investigation before deciding to pause operations with 21 Air after reviewing what she called "the surrounding circumstances" of the crash.

For the workers and families connected to the plane cleaning company, the loss is immediate and personal. For Amazon, the suspension signals the company is stepping back from a carrier tied to its delivery network while investigators figure out what caused a loaded 767 to overshoot a runway by nearly a quarter mile.

The investigation into Flight 7598 is still active, and so far nobody has said publicly what caused the plane to come in that fast in the first place.
