Deaf migrants deported without access to sign language interpreters

Federal law requires that deaf individuals interacting with immigration enforcement have access to a sign language interpreter. Reporting by Mother Jones journalist Julia Mtraux found that among the more than 100 deaf immigrants deported this year, some received no interpretation at all, while others got services too inadequate to be useful. The result: people processed and removed without grasping what was happening or why.

The situation goes beyond simply not knowing they were being deported. Some of those migrants were sent to countries that were not even their own, with no way of understanding where they were being taken. For Lubbock residents with ties to immigrant communities, or anyone who has navigated a system that requires you to understand every word to protect your rights, that detail lands hard. Deaf individuals in immigration proceedings face the same documentation pressures as anyone else, but without interpretation, they cannot meaningfully participate in a process that determines where they spend the rest of their lives. Disability advocates say the number is already drawing national attention.
