Karoll named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

Karoll averaged 44.4 yards on seven punts Saturday, and Oregon State could not return a single one. Four of those punts landed inside the Beavers' 20 yard line, including three in the first half that forced Oregon State to start drives at its own 9. It marks the first conference weekly award of Karoll's career.

For a Texas Tech program that has leaned on field position battles in road games, that kind of consistency matters. Every time Oregon State's offense started backed up near its own goal line, the pressure shifted onto their quarterback and play calling instead of Tech's defense having to bail them out. Flipping the field seven times in one game is not flashy, but it changes how an opposing coach has to attack on early downs.

Special teams rarely get the headlines that skill position players do, but Karoll's afternoon in Oregon State's building showed why coaches obsess over hidden yardage. Three drives starting at the 9 yard line is the kind of stat that shows up on a stat sheet and nowhere else, until it decides a game.
