Portland police K-9 fatally shot on final shift before retirement while chasing murder suspect

Kylo worked for the Portland Police Bureau. Officers and the US Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force were trying to take the suspect into custody when gunfire broke out and the dog was hit. The manhunt began earlier that day after Gresham Police found a body inside a home and identified a suspect in the killing. Detectives said the victim died by homicidal violence.

For the officers who worked alongside Kylo, the loss lands different than a typical line of duty death. Police dogs train for years next to their handlers, and losing one on what was supposed to be a victory lap before retirement hits a department already dealing with a homicide investigation and an active manhunt for whoever pulled the trigger.

Kylo spent his career running toward danger so people didn't have to. He did it one last time on a job he was about to leave.
