Carter has been a steady weapon for the Red Raiders, hauling in 55 passes for 624 yards and five touchdowns last season, and he'd already caught three passes for 28 yards this year before going down.

With Carter out, the tight end reps fall to seventh-year senior Jett Carpenter, freshman Matt Ludwig and fifth-year senior Jason Llewellyn. There's a wrinkle for Tech fans watching this one from Lubbock. Carpenter is an Oregon native, and he already had a large group of family and friends expected in the stands for this trip home.

Losing a proven pass catcher on the road against a Pac-12 leftover program is never ideal, especially with Tech trying to build momentum away from Jones AT&T Stadium.
