Texas Tech hosts first Global Sorghum Conference held in the U.S. - KVII

Growers from as far as France and South Africa are sitting down with Texas Tech researchers and South Plains farmers to talk through the same problems. Swisher County farmer Scott Irlbeck said the conference brings together people chasing similar goals despite growing sorghum on opposite sides of the planet. Water scarcity tops the list of concerns, along with crop resilience and the pressure to grow enough food for a world population that keeps climbing.

For Lubbock, this lands right in the backyard of a region built on dryland and irrigated farming. Sorghum has sustained the South Plains for generations because it needs less water than corn and holds up better in West Texas heat. Having international researchers and farmers debate water strategy and crop breeding at the Civic Center puts Lubbock, not some coastal ag hub, at the center of a conversation that affects food supply well beyond Texas.

Local farmers get direct access to research and techniques normally scattered across continents, and Texas Tech gets a louder voice in global agriculture. Now the rest of the world showed up to compare notes.
