The panda loan stood out as one of the only concrete results of Xi's state visit. The summit itself produced plenty of talk about goodwill between the two leaders, but no resolution to the longstanding disputes between Washington and Beijing. Trade tensions, technology restrictions and broader diplomatic friction remain unresolved.
For Atlanta, the outcome is simpler. The zoo gets its pandas back, giving the city a marquee attraction that draws crowds and headlines on its own. Panda diplomacy has a long track record of generating goodwill and tourism dollars even when bigger political questions stay stuck.
It says something about the state of US-China relations that after three days of talks between two heads of state, the most tangible outcome was two bears getting on a plane.
