Excessive rainfall remains possible across the watch area, according to the alert. The National Weather Service warns that runoff could flood rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying or flood-prone spots. Poor drainage areas and urban locations face particular risk as the system moves through.
That gives people in the six-county area roughly a day and a half of exposure to potential flooding. Residents should keep an eye on low-water crossings and areas that historically pool water during heavy rain. Farmland and rural roads can flood fast when drainage backs up.
A flood watch means conditions are favorable for flooding, not that it's guaranteed. Still, six counties spanning two regions of the Panhandle plains under one advisory is enough ground to keep a rain gauge handy through midweek.
