Investigators have not released a motive for the killing. The court filing paints a picture of a family relationship that soured long before the shooting, with McKinsey describing repeated mistreatment connected to his gender identity in the months leading up to his death.
For the three children involved, the case now means growing up in the aftermath of losing their father in an alleged murder tied to grandparents accused of joining in years of abuse against him. It also raises questions about whether the restraining order request, filed just months before the killing, was ever fully addressed by the courts.
