    First Responders, Texas Tech ROTC and more climb over 2,000 stairs to never forget 9/11

    Firefighters, police officers and Texas Tech ROTC cadets climbed 2,071 stairs, the equivalent of 110 flights, Wednesday for the fifth annual 9/11 memorial stair climb hosted by Texas Tech's Air Force ROTC. Lubbock Fire Rescue and the Lubbock Police Department turned out alongside Tech's Army ROTC, several Marines and student organizations.

    Mark Earle, director of aviation for Lubbock International Airport on September 11, 2001, says he can't remember anything about September 10th, but that morning changed everything. Earle was driving to work when the attacks began, and by the time he got to the airport, a nationwide ground stop had already stranded passengers across the country.

    Mark Umstot spent September 11, 2001, photographing the attacks on the World Trade Center from a New York rooftop, and he didn't look at those images again for ten years. Umstot grew up in Lubbock.
