  1. Call the South Plains Area Agency on Aging at 806-687-0940 or 888-418-6564. It is free and can point you to most of what is on this page.

  2. Need meals at home? Anyone can refer someone to Lubbock Meals on Wheels by calling 806-792-7971.

  3. Comparing Medicare plans? Open enrollment is Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Call the Texas Medicare Help Line at 800-252-9240.

  4. If an older adult is in danger right now, call 911. For abuse, neglect or money being taken, call the Texas Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400.

    Hot lunches delivered at home, breakfast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, limited weekend meal sacks, emergency meal boxes and even pet food for clients’ pets.

    Who qualifies
    Homebound or needs help leaving home, cannot fix a balanced meal, and has no one to cook during the day. Lubbock and Wolfforth city limits. Donations are asked, but no one is turned away for not giving.

Who helps older adults in Lubbock find services?

The South Plains Area Agency on Aging, part of the South Plains Association of Governments, is the free starting point. It connects people 60 and older, and anyone on Medicare, with benefits counseling, help with glasses, hearing aids and prescriptions, minor home repairs and in-home help. Call 806-687-0940.

When is Medicare open enrollment?

Medicare open enrollment runs October 15 through December 7. Free, unbiased help comparing plans is available from the Texas Medicare Help Line at 800-252-9240 and from the Area Agency on Aging, which holds help events across the South Plains.

What help is there for family caregivers?

The Area Agency on Aging runs a Family Caregiver Support Program for anyone 18 or older caring for someone over 60. It offers training, support groups and respite vouchers, which pay for short breaks. For dementia, the Alzheimer’s Association helpline answers at 800-272-3900, day or night.
