Hegseth is set to announce the deeper cuts in an address Wednesday, the Pentagon confirmed. The military services will have until January 1, 2027, to complete the reductions.
The move builds on a string of leadership shakeups under President Donald Trump and Hegseth. Since taking office, the two have fired or pushed to retire more than two dozen military leaders, including Gen. Randy George, the Army's top uniformed officer, who was pushed out in April.
For the officers who hold these roles, the announcement means fewer jobs at the top of the military hierarchy over the next two years. Every service branch will have to figure out who stays and who goes as the reductions play out, on top of a leadership shuffle that has already claimed some of the military's most senior uniformed officers.
The full list of who loses their stars won't be clear until Wednesday's address.
