The pair told KCBD they try to be the same people on the air that they are off it. "We're on the radio, pero somos familia," Martinez said. Carrillo said they get involved in the community and keep their conversations with listeners going once they are off the air.

That openness covers hard moments too. Martinez recently lost her mom, and she said she connected with listeners because so many were going through the same thing. That vulnerability has helped those relationships grow, she said.

The hosts also want people from other backgrounds to tune in. "Being Hispano, we welcome everybody," Martinez said, adding that nobody meets a stranger. Carrillo called the two of them a melting pot and invited newcomers to have a conversation and learn about their family traditions.

For listeners, that means a radio show that treats grief and celebration as shared ground.

After a decade on the air, their pitch is still four words: we're just like you.
