Miller Elementary students in Lubbock spent a recent school event visiting career stations built to show them jobs beyond the usual childhood answers of princess, rock star or actress.
Third grader Eli Morman already wants to be a firefighter, and classmate Avery Newton wants to be a teacher. Even with their dream jobs named, they still visited the other stations.
Morman said a member of UMC's Aero Transport team caught his interest anyway. "They're showing us what they do and how they serve our community," Morman said. He described a crew that helps people and uses a helicopter to get them home safe.
Lacy Simon, a counselor at Miller Elementary, said events like this help students consider careers they may not have known about. "I think that sometimes they get into a little bubble and they're like, I just want to be this or that," Simon said. "But this is like a whole new world for them and it's just pretty awesome."
Simon said students sometimes mirror the careers they see their parents doing every day, so a morning of stations puts other options in front of them.
