The class had to pick a project that benefits the community, student Vaughn Wurtz said. Classmates Aubrey Salm and Paul Reinke helped come up with the idea. Students trace and paint the portraits at school, and Meunier said they are putting "so much effort into it."
Meunier teaches math, and she said the lessons reach past numbers. "Even when I'm teaching math, we just want to teach good humans," she said. The project, she added, shows students the reward of being a positive light for other people.
For these kids, the payoff is already showing up. Reinke said he plans to keep doing this through high school, maybe college. "It feels amazing, helping people in general," he said. Salm said the project makes everyone in her class happy, because they know it will make other people happy. The school also follows a set of guidelines called the Winneconne Way, according to Wurtz.
Their pitch to Go Fetch was simple and honest: it might not be the best painting, but they will try their hardest.
