The Giants trailed 27-13 with less than eight minutes left in regulation before two Jameis Winston touchdown passes forced overtime. New York got the ball first and drove into Washington territory, but Dominic Zvada missed a 46-yard field goal.
The Giants forced a quick three-and-out, then went on another long drive. They reached the Washington 24-yard line, well inside Zvada's range, but wanted to get closer because he had already missed three field goals. Then Sonny Styles punched the ball out from Cam Skattebo.
Washington had its chance and wasted it. The Commanders got extremely casual and let the clock run after the previous play, even though the next score would win the game. On the final play, Jayden Daniels never threw the ball and went down with eight seconds left. Washington could not line up for a spike in time. It did not even need one, since Drew Stevens could have attempted the winning kick from roughly 41 yards.
Giants defenders jumped for joy as if they had won. Commanders players slouched in disbelief, and Dan Quinn stood furious.
Skattebo's fumble was an inexcusable mistake, yet it turned out to be only the second-worst of the afternoon.
