Christian ran unopposed for Lubbock City Council District 5 in 2018 and held the seat until 2022, when he lost the election to Dr. Jennifer Wilson. Dan Pope served as mayor during those years after winning re-election for another term. The City of Lubbock mourns his loss.
He joined KFYO several times as a councilman. In 2022, he went on the morning show to talk about Lubbock's crime statistics, gang numbers and traffic violations.
Cancer shaped his life from childhood. His first health scare came when he was eight. He told KCBD the disease ran in his family because of a genetic mutation called Lynch syndrome, and he had his colon removed in his 30s. Another diagnosis arrived just before he took office in 2018.
By February 2026, Christian, a three-time cancer survivor, was fighting stomach and esophageal cancer at the same time. He refused surgery to remove the tumors. After a long, painful conversation with his wife Margaret, he chose hospice instead.
For neighbors in District 5, his death closes the book on a representative who won his first race with no opponent. For Margaret, it ends a marriage of more than 45 years.
