The play follows Charles Condomine, a fussy, cantankerous novelist who has remarried. Then his late first wife, Elvira, turns up as a ghost. A visiting "happy medium," the eccentric and flighty Madame Arcati, calls her up. Elvira is clever, insistent, and well aware of Charles' shortcomings.
Things get worse when everyone's personalities clash and Charles' current wife, Ruth, dies by accident. She "passes over" and joins Elvira, and the two "blithe spirits" haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity. Coward also wrote Private Lives, and this much-revived classic was a smash comedy hit in London and New York.
