A newly filed custodial death report says Ocanas had diabetes, high blood pressure and other medical concerns. The Randall County Sheriff's Office reported his manner of death as natural, but the medical cause awaits an autopsy.

Potter County Detention Center sent Ocanas to Randall County, where jail staff booked him Sept. 1 on a federal hold. Staff took him to the hospital about 8:45 a.m. Sept. 10 over sores on his feet, chronic pain and low blood pressure. Hospital staff treated him through the day, and around 6:58 p.m. Jail administrators learned he had become unresponsive and medical personnel had started CPR. He died at 10:51 p.m. Texas Rangers received notice, and an in-custody death investigation began.

A federal grand jury had indicted Ocanas Aug. 27 on charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime.

His death follows the Aug. 7 death of Shaylee Rene Rachels, 28. Jail officers found her unresponsive in a cell, and she died at Northwest Texas Hospital. Her report lists a robbery conviction and says she appeared intoxicated and displayed medical problems it does not specify.
