Investigators say officers responded to the intersection on July 27, 2025, after dispatch got multiple calls reporting shots fired. A fight had broken out outside a bar involving several people. Grear had walked about a block away to his car when six to eight people opened fire, according to police. Officers found him inside the car with a gunshot wound, and he died at the scene.
Sgt. Joel Hodges, who works the cold case unit for the Amarillo Police Department, says the investigation has stalled because there is nobody left to talk to. He called his request for information a direct plea to anyone who knows something.
For people in the area, this means a violent crime with multiple witnesses has gone unsolved for months. Someone out there saw what happened. Police are banking on the hope that enough time has passed, or enough guilt has built up, to get someone to come forward now.
