Loop 88 is a 12.4-mile route just west of US 84, built as the city's response to its growing population. The plan is to strengthen transportation and traffic flow across the county so daily congestion eases. Construction is already underway in three separate phases.
In phase three, crews will restripe the road from Avenue P to Avenue U, turning that stretch back into two-way traffic. The all-way stop lets them work safely without high-speed traffic nearby. The longer goal is a Loop 88 frontage road connecting Avenue U to FM 1585.
If you drive that stretch, slow down and stay alert. Slow-moving construction equipment and service vehicles will share the road with you. Expect delays, and don't be afraid to pick an alternate route. The Lubbock Loop 88 webpage tracks the latest phases, and the TxDOT Local News page lists construction updates that affect your drive.
Construction on phase 3C isn't expected to finish until 2031.
