Dr. Andrew Offenburger, an associate professor of history, will present "When Did the West Become American: The Case for Zulu, Texas." He will focus on James and Bob Cator, two British-born adventurers who moved to the Texas Panhandle to become commercial buffalo hunters.
Offenburger first came across the name around 2019, when his book "Frontiers in the Gilded Age: Adventure, Capitalism, and Dispossession from Southern Africa to the U.S.-Mexican Borderlands, 1880-1917" came out. "It's one of the things that stuck in the back of my mind," he said. Then he couldn't help digging. "How could there be a place called Zulu, Texas?" he asked.
The talk starts at 7 p.m. In Legacy Hall inside the Jack B. Kelley Student Center. For more information, call 806-651-2459. The event belongs to the fall 2026 Garry L. Nall Lecture Series from WT's Center for the Study of the American West, which honors the service and achievements of WT Professor Emeritus of History Dr. Garry L. Nall.
