Actor Barry Corbin, born in Lamesa, returned to Lubbock for Texas Tech University's homecoming weekend, where the mayors of Lamesa and Lubbock and a state senator honored him with proclamations for his acting career.
Lamesa Mayor Hayden Davis, Lubbock Mayor Mark McBrayer and state Sen. Charles Perry, who represents Lubbock, presented them. Corbin is known for playing Maurice Minnifield in "Northern Exposure," Bob Davis in "Urban Cowboy," and Coach Whitey in "One Tree Hill."
His roots run straight through this city. He graduated from Lubbock's Monterey High School and studied theater arts at Texas Tech. Two years in the U.S. Marine Corps interrupted his schooling, and then he came back to Tech. In the 1960s he started as a Shakespearean actor, working on Broadway and in regional theater before moving to film and television.
Corbin called the recognition from his hometown the "ultimate compliment." He said he got up to Lubbock "real quick" from Lamesa, and that he carried his upbringing to New York and California and tried to "spread the Texas cheer all over."
For people here, this is a local kid story. The changes on the South Plains over the last few years surprised him.
Even so, Corbin says this place will always be home.
