Low said the fight lasted about five minutes of total action. After that, he spent his time trying to gather himself, catch his breath and control the bleeding. His wife, Chelsea Low, saw the damage when he came downstairs asking for help with the pets.

"No, you need a hospital," she told him.

Dustin Low has since had two major facial reconstructive surgeries. The third would remove the rest of his forehead flap and sew that area back up, he said. It is meant to help him return to a sense of normalcy.

The bills are stacking up. Chelsea Low says the third surgery will not happen until the couple pays $12,310 for the first two, and the last surgery costs $6,500. The couple is asking for help, and a GoFundMe is open.

They hold no anger toward the dogs and plan to keep them.

"It was a mistake. It was a freak accident. They didn't want to harm him," Chelsea Low said.
