Blueberry arrived first. Hospital Manager Lauren Webb got a call about her on Christmas Eve, after the dog turned up on the street in bad shape. "We've got to pull out a miracle," Webb recalled. The hospital saved her life.

A month later, Meadow came in from a shelter in West Virginia with leg problems and an upper respiratory infection. Both animals needed amputations, said Laurie Jenkins, the rescue's assistant director. Another month passed before they met at lunchtime, when staff snuggle animals needing extra care. Blueberry came out onto a blanket, and Meadow followed and laid on top of her. "They were together ever since," Jenkins said.

Once the pair healed, Last Chance posted them on Facebook and asked that they be adopted together. Rachel Clarke's partner, Kevin, spotted the post while scrolling. The couple already had a tripod cat, and they figured they would throw their hat in the ring, even with plenty of other interest. Clarke says Blueberry loves to play and snuggle, while Meadow is more independent. They hang out and sleep together, and Blueberry goes where Meadow goes.
